Q: What if I don't download a purchased document in time?
A: If you do not download a
purchased document within the 48 hour time frame, contact IHS Customer Care to
reactivate the order. You will be given another 48 hours to download the
document, but there is a limit to the number of times your order can be
reactivated. For any other, please contact our IHS Customer Care.
Q: Why can't I purchase some documents that are not in my
subscription?
A: There are some documents in IHS
Standards Expert that have controlled distribution restrictions placed on them.
Even though they are designated by an Order icon, to acquire the document you
will need to contact IHS
Customer Care.
Q: Why can't I log in sometimes?
A: There are occasions when you
may try to log in, but your company has reached the maximum number of licenses
or individuals that are allowed access to IHS Standards Expert at any given
time. You can try to access the product at a later time when a license has been
released because someone logged off or, if it happens frequently, you may want
to purchase more simo licenses from IHS. If this is the case, contact your IHS
Sales Representative for pricing and options.
Q: How
do I look at Redlines?
A: If an ASTM Standard has a
Redline describing the differences between the current version and the previous
version, there will be a Redline link beneath the document link on the Results
screen. Click the Redline link to
access the Redline document. You will notice a vertical bar appears in the left
margin indicating there is a change to the document (section, paragraph, etc.).
Additions are noted with underlining, and deletions are noted with a strike
through.
Q: What
are Favorites?
A: Favorites are documents you
frequently reference. This is a quick list of documents for your own personal
use. You can select to have alerts for the documents on your favorites list. If
you dont want to be notified of changes to your Favorites, you can disable the
alerts.
Q. What
are Alerts?
A: An alert is an automated email notification sent to you
from the IHS Standards Expert application when documents on your Favorites or
Watch Lists are revised. If you do not want to be notified of changes to any of
the documents on these lists, you can disable the email notification feature on
the Alerts tab. Click the Favorites or Watch Lists check box to remove the
check mark and turn off the option. You can also deselect the option under the Email Alerts panel on the Favorites tab or
modify the List Alert Settings under the List Management panel on the Watch Lists tab.
Q: Can
I replace a document on my Favorites list and still have the old document on
the list, or does one replace the other?
A: If you go to the Favorites tab and click the Document (Update) link in the Tools column, it will
replace the older version with the current version. If you want to retain both
versions on your Favorites list, you need to search on the older version, and
then add it to your Favorites list from the Results screen. It will be noted as Active in the Status column. The
newer version will continue to be noted as Revised version until you select the
Document (Update) link to update it, at which time it will then replace the
older version with a Status of Active.
Q: What does Revision Group mean?
A: A Revision Group is a revision level of a document
including all amendments, notices, and supplements for that revision level. All
documents in a Revision Group are active and are part of the active standard
for that standard development organization.
Q: Can
I be notified of updates to important documents?
A: Yes. You can be notified of updates to documents that are
included in either your Favorites or a Watch List. For specific documents,
simply add any document you wish to track to either your Favorites or a Watch
List, and then modify the alert settings on the list to adjust your preferences
for notification.
Q: Is
there an easier way other than performing a search to find sections of the ASME
Boiler Code (BPVC)?
A: Yes. Click the Table of
Contents tab or the Go to ASME BPVC Table of Contents link
beneath the Search button.
Q: Is
there someone I can call to get help and answers to questions?
A: Contact IHS Customer Care for any and all questions. You can also go to the Training & Support tab for specific feature tips, tools
and help options.
Q: Whats
the difference between a Favorites list and a Watch List?
A: The Favorites list is designed for you to quickly access
documents you frequently use. A Watch List accomplishes this as well, but has
additional features, such as:
Q: Why
do I have to register?
A: Several product features are personalized for the
individual user and require registration. These features include:
Q: How
do I quickly search on documents within my subscription?
A: Deselect all filters on the
Search tab, select the My Subscription filter, and then click Search.
Please note that depending on the number of documents in your subscription, it
may take a few seconds to retrieve your list.
Q: Can
I search the full-text of the PDF document?
A: Yes. There are three text searches available: Title,
Abstract, and the full-text of the PDF document. To search the full-text of the
document, check the All Document Text box that appears under the Keyword entry field in the Search tab.
Q: How
can I refine my search to only include documents from a few organizations?
A: Under the Advanced
Filters panel, click on the more... link for Organization. You are
presented with the available Organizations. Select the ones you want to limit
your search results to, and then click Submit and proceed with your search.
Q: Whats
the difference between a Details link and a History link?
A: The Document Details link goes to information details specific to that document, such as the date,
the status, the title, the document language, organization/author information,
the documents abstract, and more. The History link goes to a list of all versions of the document in descending order by the
date.
Q: How do I
clear my search filters?
A: For basic Search filters (Titles, Abstracts, All Document Text, Active Status, My Subscription,
Favorites), deselect the check box, and then click the Search button. For Advanced Search filters (Organization,
Status, Document Type, Date Range, Segment, ICS Code, FSC Code), click on the red X for a specific filter at the top of
the results list and the results are automatically reset. To clear an entire
results list, click the Clear My Search link beneath the Search button and the results are automatically cleared.
Q: Why are
some documents locked?
A: Beginning in December, 2006, some of the PDF files in IHS
Standards Expert were marked with a Lock icon, indicating these documents have
a Digital Rights Management (DRM) security feature that protects the authors
intellectual property. If there is no Lock, your access is not affected. This
security currently applies to all of the PDF files in the AWS collection and
some collections from ANSI and ISO. Opening the Secure PDF files requires a
one-time download of a free plug-in, FileOpen.
Once it is downloaded, you will be able to access these secure documents
without further action.
Q: How can I save a PDF in my subscription, which has the Digital Rights Management (DRM) security feature applied?
A: If permissions allow, subscribers can do shift-ctrl+S to save the PDF when the save icon is grayed out. If that does not work, saving is not permitted for the PDF.
Q: What
are the requirements for my system?
A: To run the IHS Standards Expert application and achieve the
best performance of downloading/displaying the application screens and PDF
documents, IHS recommends that you have the most current version for your
Browser and Adobe Reader installed.
