Documents
Click the document number
links in results lists or Document
History reports, or click the View Doc button on the Menu
bar, to view the documents.
Note: If you do
not subscribe to the document collection, you will not be able to link to
the document. However, if you subscribe to the Specs & Standards Pay-per-View
functionality you can click the
icon and purchase an electronic (pdf) copy using your credit card. To check
the scope of your subscription, click Tools > Subscription
on the Specs & Standards Menu bar.
Note: An IHS Copyright
Notice window will prompt you to either Accept and go to document or
Decline and close the window. Once you accept the copyright notice
for a particular organization, subsequent document views in that collection
will not include this window.
Assuming you have Adobe
Acrobat® Reader installed, a new window will open with
the document in the bottom frame. If the document was returned as the result
of a full text search, you will be taken to the first occurrence of your search
terms.

Use the Acrobat toolbar
functions to navigate and print the document. See Using
the Acrobat Toolbar. Many documents (such as the one displayed above) have
Bookmarks. Click the bookmark links to move to the various sections of
the document.
The display for military
documents and some industry standards also contains a Revision Group
drop-down list in the upper right corner:

Click the Revision Group
drop-down list to quickly view other documents (newer/historical, notices, etc.)
in the document family.
Click the Close button
in the upper right corner to close the document.

Bar Functions

When viewing a document,
the following buttons are available on the Menu bar:

Inactive
when you are already viewing a document. |
| History |
Click
to review document history. The Document
History window also indicates if the document is ANSI approved or DoD
adopted, and it lists the FSC (Federal Supply Class) and IHS PCN(s) (Product
Code Numbers), if applicable. |
| Abstracts |
Click
to view the document's Scope paragraph. Not all documents have
Abstracts. |
| Referenced
Documents |
Click
to view a list of all documents referenced in the document you are viewing.
Just click the links to quickly view any referenced document. Not all documents
have Referenced Documents. |
| Add
Doc to List |
Click
to add the document you are viewing to a Personal Document List. Searching by Personal Document List saves time and quickly retrieves your
frequently referenced documents. Personal Document Lists can also help you stay on top
of compliance issues by sending you email notifications when documents on
your lists are revised. |

10 Docs Viewed |
Click
to receive links to the last 10 documents you have viewed. |
Using
the Acrobat Toolbar

The toolbar shown
below is found at the top of PDF documents.

Adobe Acrobat Reader (Version 5.0) Toolbar. Depending upon your display options,
your toolbar may look slightly different.

Adobe
button. Takes you to the Adobe website. |

Save
button. Allows you to save a copy of the file that is being viewed. |

Print button.
Brings up the Print dialog box.

There are several
print options. Select the All radio button to print an entire document
without opening all the subparts. You can also choose to print the Current
page or select the Pages from radio button to print a range
of pages.

Show/Hide Navigation
Pane button. This is an extremely useful tool! Click to show the bookmark
feature. Below is a screen shot of a document before clicking the Show/Hide
Navigation button.

The following screen
shot shows same document after clicking the Show/Hide Navigation Pane
button. You now can see the bookmarks for the PDF document.

Now the bookmarks
are visible. Click a bookmark to advance to that page.
Note: If
you click the Show/Hide Navigation Pane button and you do not
see any bookmarks you may have to click and drag the window frame to
re-size the bookmark window. In some versions of the Acrobat Reader,
the bookmark tab is on the top of the window.
Note: Not
all documents contain bookmarks.

Hand
tool. When selected it enables the user to move the PDF document. Works
much the same as the horizontal and vertical scroll bars. |

The
Zoom In/Out tools. Select either of these buttons, and then click the
page or drag to draw a rectangle around the area to zoom in or zoom out.
Notice the small arrow at the right side of the buttons (in other versions
of Acrobat Reader the arrow will be on the buttons). Click the arrow to
expand and contract the buttons. |

The
Text and Column Select tools. This is another important tool. Notice
the small arrow along the right side (in other versions the arrow is within
the button). Click the arrow to expand and contract these buttons. The first
button is the Text Select tool. To use it, select the first letter of the
sentence or phrase and drag to the last letter to select text, then right-click
the highlighted area and choose Copy or select Edit
> Copy from the Menu bar. The next button is the Column
select tool. When the document text is in a multi-column format
and you only want to copy one of the columns select this tool. |

Graphics Select tool. Use to select graphics. Then right-click the highlighted
graphic and choose Copy or select Edit > Copy
from the Menu bar. |

PDF
navigation buttons. The first button will take you to the first page
of the PDF document. The next button will take you to the previous page.
The third button will take you to the next page. The last button will take
you to the end of the document. |

PDF
navigation buttons. The first button takes you to the previous view.
The next button takes you to the next view. |

PDF
Size buttons. The first page button sizes the PDF to actual size, the
next page button fits the PDF to the size of the window, and the last button
fits the PDF to the width of the window. |

Orientation
buttons. The first button turns the document 90 degrees counter clockwise.
The second button turns it 90 degrees clockwise. |

Find button.
Click to find specific words within the document. The Find dialog box
appears.

Type the word you
want to find and click the Find button. Use the check box options
as necessary.

Search
Term Navigation buttons. When a Text search is done on the full text,
and a PDF document is opened, these buttons will take you to the occurrences
of your search term within the document. Click the first button to go to
the previous highlighted search term, the second button to go to the next
highlighted term. |
